This letter has nothing to do with music and of interest to the 6 of you who actually live in the great state of ‘Commiefornia’ (the state bird is the yella-bellied ‘cuck’atiel)1.
In Eagle Rock in front of the Target is a churro cart so tasty that it’s no longer there. My dream is that they’ve outgrown the cart and have become an empire of long doughs (ELD) in the Greater Los Angeles Area. That if you wanted to start your own LD business, they will destroy you with their tentacle-like long doughs of monopolistic reach. Once, I stood there in the freezing 59F night air waiting for the guy’s daughter to drive-by sugar him, which she did 20mins later, and had a mini existential crisis in my mind, like a real stupid Waiting for Godot where I felt (and continue to feel) I have done nothing with my life, and why do I even deserve the privilege of standing here waiting for this guy to fry me up some delicious churros? In some ways I’m still there in front of that Target, forever unable to move on. But: gorgeous flavors out of limited ingredients. Never had better.
Best vegan donuts I’ve had is at Good Town Doughnuts in Costa Mesa. Tastes as good if not better than your donutypical pastries. Definitely pricy, like 4, 5 bucks a ‘nut (comparable to Sidecar), but who needs health insurance. They’re big guys, too, so you get a mouthful for sure. Great colors and textures, feels good to eat. Don’t really have anything personally interesting to say about this place. Every time I see donut spelled doughnut I have to pronounce the g and the h hard, like doe-guh-[exhale], and then Nut, y’all!
100% ‘rrhea-worthy for the lactose intolerant (I am) is Some Crust Bakery in the Village in Claremont. They have my favorite chocolate croissant. And I say chocolate croissant specifically because it’s not really pain au chocolat. It’s literally ‘chock-full’ of dark choc in a hefty bread rectangle—that’s it. You don’t understand how little chocolate other bakeries put in their ‘sants, like ‘well, that’s the proper balance’—no! I want imbalance: 100% bread, 400% choc! And these cc’s are hawt as fuck. I wanna look at ‘em longingly, tell them how much they mean to me. One of my favorite things in life. Years go by between eatings, though. Why can’t there be a service solely to bring me fresh cc every few days? Money? Is that it? Anyway, if you’re French or generally hyper-critical about bread, don’t give me shit, all right? I admit I grew up eating here so that may play a factor in the tastebud development of me. It’s possible it’s not great. Fuck you.
silly that I feel I have to make sure people know I’m kidding, right?
I’ll start working on my cc skills. 100%/400% might get me executed in France but I’m willing to take that risk.
pastries > sadness
🇫🇷: 100 % bread / 400% choc 👌🏼
